It is with deep regret that we have learned of the passing of our fellow equestrian Joseph “Stumpy” Mello

For many “older” members of the BEF, they will have fond memories of Stumpy participating in the horse racing at Shelly Bay Race Track with his small “powerhouse” “Little Elmer”.  After the closing of the Race Track and with the formation of the Bermuda Horse and Pony Assoc.,  Stumpy kept a keen interest in equestrianism.  Competing at Vesey Street Shows as well as the Agricultural Exhibition where horse racing was still a ‘class’ - Little Elmer continued to be his pride and joy.

Stumpy owned and raised many horses.   One being “Rosie” - a multi-talented Canadian bred mare.  Stumpy drove Rosie in the farm horse classes as well as pleasure driving - always in the line-up.  Patsy, Stumpy’s daughter, was also successful with Rosie in jumping classes.  (Do you remember Rosie’s baby Velvet and her baby Tinsel?)   “Sparrow”, a Bermuda bred stallion, was also shown by Stumpy with great pride - whether it be in the Farm Horse class, Bermuda Bred class and others.

“Stumpy” was a regular Exhibitor at the Annual Agricultural Exhibition and also served as a Steward in the Equestrian, cattle, and goat divisions.

“Stumpy” was a long serving member of the Bermuda Hunt Club - a true faithful whether it be rain, blow or shine.  “Stumpy” was one of the original Hunt members and he and William Madeiros usually teamed up as it was up to William to retrieve the check points as “Stumpy” had difficulty re-mounting his horse - unless there was a tree stump close by!   “Stumpy” was also a member of the Driving Horse and Pony Association and officiated in the Starting Vehicle for pony racing at Vesey Street.

Our thoughts and prayers are extended to the Mello Family.  May their wonderful memories of a fine gentleman help them through this sad time.

Contributed.
