MARVIN ‘TEDDY’ ADDERLEY
.

I regret to announce the death of to what I and I am sure many of  'the old time horseman' would consider a great horseman, Marvin 'Teddy' Adderley.

My Uncle Teddy was into horses, which he picked up from my Grandfather, Ross Adderley (who we lost last year April), long before I came to Bermuda, which was when I was 2 yrs old.  The horse that I most remember was his Tennessee walker, 'Hand Shakers Dream', which 'us kids' (my self, my two sisters, Kelly and Dana (Roni) Adderley, and our cousin Shaune) learned to ride.

In the 1970's my Uncle Teddy was into driving and hackney ponies, Buster Bo Brown, & Cherokee White Cloud.  I remember in the late 70's when Mr. Raymond White, Mr. 'Cheese' Ray and my Grandfather and maybe a few more, flew in some racing ponies, which got the races going in those days, 'us kids' were down the airport helping off load the ponies until after midnight.

My Grandfather bought a pony, a pacer, named Wee Brooke Laddy Boy, (there were a few ponies here from the Wee Brooke line), and my Uncle Teddy bought a trotter named 'Good Time Lightnin' (from the Good Time line that was here).  But for those of you who new my Uncle Teddy, 'Laddy' became my Uncle's pony, when he took it upon himself to trade Cherokee with Laddy.

Back in those days (boy I sound old!) the pony races were held at PHC and Nationals Sports Club, and let’s not forget the St. David's Island Horse Shows.  Every time there were pony races 'us kids' tagged along, as the grooms of course.

My sisters and I took riding lessons for a while, and then Kelly and I got back into the ponies with our Uncle.  We learned about driving hackneys (fine and pleasure harness, pacers, trotters and roadsters.  My mother even eventually became a driver.  We then became the trainers, jogging them on the road and later on the old Shelly Bay field, when Uncle Teddy kept the ponies and the old race track stables.

My sisters and I learned a lot from our Uncle Teddy.  You had better make sure you swept up after yourself when you cleaned your pony and after you put him away.  Always wash down your pony with Absorbine or Tuttles after you jogged them, and make sure you put a sweat sheet on them.  We were also the tack cleaners before a show or a race, and that viceroy, jogcart or sulky better be clean, and the chrome on the viceroy shinning.  The tack had to be spotless and he always took extra tack, just in case.

We were part of the driving crowd with people like, Michael DeCosta, Morris Correia, Frances DeSilva, Ronny DeSilva, Harry Andrews, William Madeiros, Charlie Rebello, Tony 'Fuffa', Mr. William Ray and many, many more.

Our Uncle gave us our turn, when he would come and watch us at the shows, and even be our groom, like he was at the last Exhibition.  He was looking forward to grooming for us at this years Exhibition, he will be missed, and we will be thinking of him.  I plan to forward this or at least just a request to the Exhibition Committee to hold a moment of silence for my Grandfather, Mr. Ray, and my Uncle Teddy (and any others who we have lost) on the first day of the Exhibition
