OCTOBER
2007 |

To All
Members. |
Another
competition season is upon us and we have already had harness pony
racing, dressage shows and clinics, clear round jumping, and the
first Hunt is this Sunday, preceded by the SPCA Expo on Saturday.
Busy times. |
Harness
pony racing continues to become more popular, with additional ponies
out on the track and more on the way. Ways of extending the present
track are still being investigated. |
The
cost of running the NEC continues to be a problem and we have
approached Government again to see if we can get some financial
assistance. We are also looking into putting up advertising boards
at NEC. |
Also on
the positive side twelve year old Tyler Lopes has been selected to
go to Concord Mass this week to participate in an International
dressage clinic and show arrange by the Bear Spot Foundation. There
will be participants there from 16 countries from North, Central and
South America as well as the Caribbean and is a great opportunity
for Tyler to expand on his riding and driving talents. |
Other
juniors selected to travel overseas are Patrice Swan and JayLynn
Hines who will be representing Bermuda in Kingston Jamaica at the
final round of this years CEA Junior Jumping Competition the first
weekend in November. Riders from Barbados and Trinidad will also be
competing. |
The CEA
Mini Dressage Challenge involving Bermuda, Trinidad, Barbados,
Antigua, Cayman and Jamaica is being held this month with the judge
travelling around between countries. Our date is Saturday 13th
October with the competition starting tba am. The judge is Cecilia
Hanssen from Sweden. Many thanks to all those who have assisted in
arranging this important competition which is based upon the FEI
Challenge. Results are posted on the BEF website at the following
link as soon as available
http://www.bef.bm/cearules2/ceainformation.htm . |
Unfortunately we have had to cancel the CEA Adult Jumping Challenge
as a suitable date could not be arranged. We tried to fit it into
the BHPA Show, but this proved to be impractical as the show really
needs to be self supporting. We will try again next year and in the
mean time extend our thanks to the BHPA for trying and to Steve
Gibbons for designing the courses. |
The
success of our three riders at the Pan American Games this summer
has been recognized by the FEI in the form of a personal letter of
congratulations from Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, the President of
the FEI and who promises support for the smaller developing
countries in an effort to make our sport more universal. |
We have
two riders qualified for the 2008 Olympics in Show Jumping, but can
only send one. The selection process is being finalised so that we
all know what the riders are expected to do. Jillian Terceira and
Patrick Nisbett are in contention, and have been recognized by the
BOA Elite Athlete programme with a small grant. Dressage rider
Annabelle Collins has also been recognized in the same programme. |
The
tremendous Fund raising efforts by members of the BEF for the Pan
American Games raised the grand total of $49,500.00. This was a
little short of the 50% that we were aiming for to assist the
Bermuda Olympic Association, but was very much appreciated. Many
thanks to all. |
Now we
can look forward to a similar effort for Olympics 2008, but we will
have only one horse. |
Part of
that effort will be the Bermuda Olympic Association TAG DAY which is
being held this coming Friday 5th October in Hamilton.
Please give generously, and many thanks to those BEF members who
have agreed to be ‘taggers’ outside of the Bank of Butterfield,
Rosebank Centre. |

Junior
Athlete Scholarship awardee Stephanie Wilkinson spent some time in
Kentucky this summer, and is aiming to qualify for the North
American Young Riders Junior Championships next year. |
