National Junior Athlete Sponsorship Programme . |

GOAL
- To
provide encouragement and incentives to Bermudian junior athletes,who
clearly show commitment, promise and achievement in their sport. . |
|
|
OBJECTIVES 1. - To recognize Bermudian junior athletes who clearly demonstrate the commitment, performance and potential to become Elite Athletes. 2. - To provide financial assistance for Bermudian junior athletes whose performance has shown a clear indication of development in selected sports. 3. - To support and provide opportunities for Bermudian junior athletes to reach their full potential. . |

PROGRAMME Grant funding will be made available through the National Junior Athlete Sponsorship Committee, who shall be appointed annually by the Minister of Community Affairs and Sport, to assist athletes who are junior athletes and who are not otherwise deemed eligible for financial assistance. This contribution is intended to provide training inducements to promising junior athletes, who are likely to achieve Elite Athlete performance status given their continued participation and commitment to their sport. . |

Such
assistance will be provided to six (6) athletes per year with no more than
one (1) athlete selected from any one sport.
Assistance will include equipment purchases, tuition/coaching and
expenses for international training events or competitions. . |

Sport
Governing Bodies should submit their selected candidate to the National
Junior Athlete Sponsorship Committee for inclusion in the award selection
process by completing the application form, and forwarding it to the
Committee, c/o The Department of Youth, Sport & Recreation, 40 Church
Street, Hamilton HM 12. . |

|
Completed application forms for consideration for awards for the year
2004 should reach the committee not later than February 11, 2005 |
|
|
SELECTION
PRIORITIES Preamble: The Committee shall have regard to the following criteria in determining the support it provides to junior athletes. . |
|
|
A.
- Recipients
must have demonstrated a sustained level of excellence and commitment to
his/her sport together with good attitudinal and social maturity. . |
|
|
B.
- Recipients
must clearly demonstrate the potential and the maturity
to physically and emotionally benefit from being granted special
status through the programme. . |
|
|
C.
- Recipients
must pledge to commit themselves to a programme of development that is
designed to assist them in reaching their full potential. . |
|
|
D.
- Training
events for which funding is provided must be a recognized
event in which selected junior athletes should increase their
development and performance levels. . |
|
|
E
- Equipment
purchases must be confined to the implements essential for the playing of
the sport. For this programme,
travelling uniforms are not considered essential equipment; however, a
soccer ball, cricket bat, tennis racquet, or hockey stick are examples of
essential sports equipment. . |

F.
- Tuition/Coaching
applies to local or overseas development training programmes that would
clearly benefit the junior athlete in improving his/her level of
performance. . |

G
- In
selecting their candidate, Sport Governing Bodies should have regard to the
level of achievement the athlete has attained, the normal maturation
determinants
of the sport, the age of the athlete, records and achievements attained,
level of maturity and social adjustment etc. . |

H
- This
programme is open to participants who are Bermudian and registered with a
National Sport Body and regularly practising and competing in the sport for
which funding is being sought. . |

Notes: 1.- The committee has determined that for the purposes of the award, applications in respect of persons deemed by the Ministry of Labour & Immigration to be Bermudian prior to their formal application at the age of majority, shall be considered. Proof of eligibility MUST be submitted. 2.- The committee has determined that the rules of competition for the sport under which an application is made shall indicate the definition of a junior. 3.-The committee has determined that applications will NOT be considered on behalf of any athlete who has benefitted from, or who is eligible to benefit from, the Elite Athletes Fund. . |
