NATIONAL COACHING PROGRAMME
&
AWARDS

One of the responsibilities of National Sports Governing Bodies is the development of their sport especially at the Youth level, in order to maintain continuity and to ensure an improvement at all levels of performance.  This is equally important for officials as well as athletes.

In 1990 the B.E.F. embarked on a scheme to encourage participation in clinics on a regular bi-monthly basis by riders as a supplement to weekly lessons conducted by local coaches.

David Ballard, a successful trainer and course designer from Canada, was appointed and with the assistance of a grant from Government Youth and Sports Department visited five to six times a year.

For a number of years we had also been fortunate to have the benefit of expertise from a number of visitors most notably Dick Stillwell, Molly Sivewright, Robert Dover, George Williams and Carol Green all of whom were sponsored by individuals or clubs.

We have also had the benefit more recently of a number of clinicians also assisted by the Government Grant specifically designated for development of our sport.

The F.E.I. has developed a scheme to encourage the training of coaches worldwide and we have participated in the level one course so far, with a level two possibly being made available later.  With the assistance of Carol Green the B.E.F. did develop a training scheme based on the International Group for Equestrian Qualifications This group is  recognized by the F.E.I. and is now in 32 countries world wide.  Passports issued by the group to suitably qualified instructors are recognized in all affiliated countries as are the basic certificates in horse care and the awards at bronze, silver and gold levels.

This is a progressive scheme which means that all participants must start at the basics and cannot move up until each level has been successfully completed.  There is however a way to recognize qualifications such as British Horse Society levels.

We currently have ten instructors who have acquired the I.G.E.Q passports.
They are:-

 Catrina Sims
Abby Bardgett
Nick DeCosta
Melissa Flood
Gina Maughan
Dawn Fox
Judy Hagen
Ann Lindroth
Michael Rodrigues
Kate Terceira

We have 3 members who have acquired the Horse Care Certificates one and two, 18 at Bronze level, 6 at Silver and 7 at Gold.
