The North American Young Riders Championships (NAYRC) is the premier
equestrian competition in North America for young riders, age
16-21. Young equestrians from the United States, Bermuda, Canada,
Mexico, the Caribbean Islands and South America compete in the three Olympic equestrian
disciplines of Show Jumping, Dressage and Eventing. The
competition is run under the rules of the FEI (Federation Equestre
Internationale, the international governing body for equestrian
sport). The NAYRC is also designated as an official USA Junior
Olympics-Equestrian event.
The NAYRC began in 1974 as an eventing challenge between the United States and Canada. A Dressage Championship was added in 1981, and Show Jumping was added in 1982. The first complete NAYRC was held in British Columbia, Canada in 1982. 2002 saw the introduction of riders from South America. Bermuda has competed in the NAYRC since 1983 a list of those competitors follows: EVENTING DRESSAGE SHOW JUMPING The most successful rider was Michelle Ingham who in 1993 won a bronze medal in Dressage, riding a horse she had leased from Cara Witham. We have also had representation from Bermuda as FEI Officials Joan Taplin, Judy Hagen and Paul Pereech have served as members of the Ground Jury. And in 2004 Paul will serve as Foreign Delegate for Show Jumping. All those juniors aspiring to International level are strongly encouraged to take this route
