MJ Tumbridge is the daughter of Mrs. Irene Tumbridge and the late Mr. Ralph Tumbridge of Bermuda.  She started riding at the age of  7 at  Warwick Riding School (now Spicelands Riding Centre).

After competing in Bermuda for a number of years, at the age of 18 she went to live and compete in the United States where she stayed for approximately 10 years. MJ was coached in the US by Carol Blackman, Ralph Hill and Louise Merryiman.  MJ trained for 3 to 4 years with Louise and worked at the Millbrook Equestrian Centre which Louise ran.  She went with Louise every winter to Florida which was a great experience.  MJ says she got a tremendous amount of help from Louise and owes her a lot!

MJ was part of the Bermuda Young Riders programme which started in the early 1980's encouraged by our then most experienced rider Peter Gray.  For further information on the NAYR  and Bermuda's involvement see  North American Young Riders

In 1985 MJ competed at the North American Young Riders Championships in Chicago riding Carol Ann Blackman's horse 'Sight Unseen' placing 4th individually.
1990 she competed at the World Championship in Sweden in 1990 riding 'Bermuda's Pizzaz'
1991 she competed at the Pan American Championships in November on 'Bermuda's Option' - winning the individual silver medal.
The Bermuda Team at these championships consisted of  MJ Tumbridge (2nd), Peter Gray (6th), Carol Ann Blackman (14th), and Garry Roque (19th), placed second overall.

MJ moved to England from the United States in 1992 where she is now based at Frillinghurst Farm with 'Team Frillinghurst' - Patrick and Amanda Rolfe - at their 90 acre grassland farm in Surrey.  She has been there since 1995 and first met Patrick and Amanda when she started teaching them and went on to train Patrick for eventing.  Her situation has evolved since then and they now breed event horses at the farm as well as producing event mares who will eventually retire to stud - that is how she has ended up riding mares exclusively.

Ginger May Killinghurst - Advanced Selle Francais

MJ has had a quiet time competitively this year, as her main competition horse Ginger May Killinghurst has been out of action following an injury at Badminton last year.  She hopes however to be able to represent Bermuda at the Pan Am Games in 2007.
